Boflex Inventor Bio

Dosho Tessema Shifferaw was born the son of  Major General Shiferaw Tessema who served under Emperor Haile Selassie’s Ground forces and the Genet Military Academy.  Dosho came to America when he was 19 years old with just $500 in his pocket and supported himself as a cab driver while attending San Francisco City College.  As a frustrated student Dosho worked endless hours trying to build the perfect ergonomically correct chair.  While brainstorming to complete this Student Project Dosho was frustrated and frantically trying to find the solution to his problem picked up a metal rod and bent it around his head.

At this very moment the invention of one of the most well known pieces of fitness equipment in the world  (The Bowflex) was born.  Dosho immediately patented this idea but struggled with fitness equipment manufacturers to market his idea and soon began marketing this product to consumers.  After many failed attempts to the closed minded, vision lacking manufacturers Dosho found much success. Eventually Dosho brought the Bowflex to market leading his invention to a very successful IPO under the name of the Direct Focus Group.  With sales topping over 3 billion dollars from the Bowflex  DFXI sold its rights to The Nautilus Group.  The Nautilus Group Continues to manufacture and market primarily through infomercials and retailers world wide.

Dosho has 16 patents on his non-conventional home gym that used pulleys and cables, instead Dosho created the Bowflex to use  a combination of polymer rods to create constant resistance or tension.  The machines are marketed as a complete home gym taking much less space than the traditional weight machines taking up much less physical space.

Dosho will be known as the man that changed the Fitness Equipment Industry with his Bowflex Exercise Machine but don’t be confused this was just one of many inventions that Dosho’s legacy will be credited with.

Months after the 2010 BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico Dosho founded SOOLPS or  The Shifferaw Oil Ocean Leak Prevention System, SOOLPS, guaranteed to put both environmentalists and oil companies at ease.  SOOLPS is designed to funnel oil from any leaking or ruptured deep sea oil rig.  It acts to guide the leaking oil to its designated area without harming the environment, sea life and ocean.

Dosho Tessema Shifferaw was an inventor, father and a humanitarian and will be missed by all.

Thank you Doshu for all of you inventions and for changing Exercise Equipment, Being a humanitarian, philanthropist and a Good Man.

When it is time to open up a health club, personal training studio, wellness center or simply tryint to put together a quality home gym the most important thing to consider is to find a repuatable fitness equipment supplier.  The question is How Do I?

Over the past twenty years fitness equipment has become a multi billion dollar industry.  Whether you are working out in the gym, your home or listening to conversations on the news it is surrounding us.  Have you asked yourself where are people gettting this equipment?  If you were to purchase a home gym for your basement or your home exercise room equipment has become readily avialable on line, Big Box Stores as well as specialty retail stores.  Where is the best place to start?

Without being said fitness is a serious business for both the consumer as well as the supplier.  Most important when purchasing equipment your main objective should be to purchase equipment that is going to help get the results both you and your clientele are looking for.  Without results your interest and your investment are merely a waste.  With that being said finding a reputable fitness equipment supplier should be a priority.  Finding a reputable supplier means you should be searching people that are in the business to supply, service and advise you on equipment that best suits your goals, purpose and your budget.

After researching a few different fitness equipment suppliers, checking their Better Business Bureau rating and communicating with each of them you then can narrow it down after you have educated yourself on what is important to you.  In the fitness industry you will find experts as well as mere suppliers.  Experts will educate you as a consumer and professional on what will help you be successful with both your fitness and business goals.

If you are a consumer some very important factors when choosing a Reputable Fitness Equipment Supplier Are:

  • Check the amount of time they have been in business.
  • Understand the nature of their business, is it fitness or a little of everything.
  • Check their Better Business Bureau rating.
  • Find out if they supply service after the sale, it is inevitable that because of the amount of moving parts on cardio equipment it will break and you will need in home service.
  • Talk to the sales consultants and figure out if they have your best interest in mind or are they just trying to get a sale regardless of what they are selling you. Do they have your goals in mind and have they objectively chosen a piece of equipment for your needs and goals.

If you are a facility offereing fitness some very important factors when choosing a Reputable Fitness Equipment Supplier Are:

  • Do they supply 2 and 3d CAD layouts to assure you the layout of the facility as well as what you need so you don’t over or under buy.
  • Do they have a  reputable service department.
  • Check some supplied references to assure that their past customers are happy and that they did not sell the equipment and walk away from the facility when their were issues.
  • Do they offer inservice for both the equipment as well as service in the event that you wanted your in house technicians to repair your equipment.
  • Find out the response time for parts and services for both the manufacturers of the equipment and the supplier.  Equipment that is down causes significant issues for a pays due facility.

As you can see finding a Reputaple Fitness Equipment Supplier will take some time and energy.  Many times people are very disappointed because they have chosen price over the quality of the supplier and equipment and can be very detrimental to both the facility as well as your own personal fitness goals.

Dual Adjustable Cable Column Strength Equipment

Weather you are looking at a piece of weight training equipment for use in your home gym or you are in need of a center piece for your commercial fitness center having a dual adjustable cable column is a must.  Many times it is going to come down to how much room your strength equipment area has.  Home gym areas, fire stations, personal training studios, therapy clinics, and smaller clubs do not necessarily have the space for elaborate Jungle Gym-style cable crossover units such as the Life Fitness MJ8 Multi-Jungle Gym.  Although, it’s nice to look at and a very impressive piece of fitness equipment hardware not all workout rooms will allow for something that large.  Now enter the functional trainer. Not only does a functional trainer resemble a shrunken down cable crossover in looks and function, but it takes up about half the space and allows for other unique motions.

Different Types of Cable Crossovers

  • Standard Cable Crossover – This consists of two adjustable pulleys situated facing each other connected by one or two cross-bars.  Just about every manufacturer has something like this from Body Solid with the GDCC250 Deluxe Cable Crossover with its low stature that is designed for home use as well as light commercial applications to Cybex with 17110 Free-Standing Cable Crossover that is designed for use in some of the most high demanding commercial gym equipment environments.
  • Jungle Gyms – These units are more of the modular design.  They take a Standard Cable Crossover and allow you to add additional stations to give the ability to create 4, 5, 6, 8, all the way up to 12 station monster units such as the Precor CW2912

Different Types of Functional Trainers

  • Cabinet Style – Originally made popular with the now discontinued Cybex 9101 FT-360 that had a single weight stack and Preying Mantis-like arms (many times you can still find these units re-manufactured), companies such as FreeMotion with the F624 Dual Cablecross and Paramount Fitness with the PFT-200A took them to a new level by having two independent weight stacks.  Cabinet Style Functional Trainers do not take up much floor space when they are not in use, but they do require a lot of space around them for maneuvering the arms and doing certain motions.
  • Dual Adjustable Cable Column – Most of the functional trainers on the market now are this style.  These are the ones that resemble a shrunken down cable crossover with the two adjustable pulleys with weight stacks that face each other and are connected by cross-bars.  Most of these systems now have very unique sub-sets such as the Cybex Bravo Functional Trainer that has the patented Progressive Stability Pad and the Advanced Cable Adjustment System, the Batca Fitness LD-9 Free Trainer that has a Total Body Stretching Station and a Weight Assisted Chin-Up Station, the York Barbell 55017 Functional Cable Crossover that has a Modular Design allowing for up to 8 total stations, the Matrix G3-MFST3P Functional Trainer that has Rock Climbing Pull-Up Grips and a Swiveling Accessory Station, and the Life Fitness CMDAP with Console that has a Video Screen with over 60 exercise videos.

What is the Best Dual Adjustable Cable Column Exercise Equipment?

This comes down to two factors, your needs and your space.  A small club or a home will be better off with a functional trainer or functional trainers.  You can fit two functional trainers into the same space as one cable crossover.  This would make the functional trainer ideal for personal training studios, sports performance facilities, or clubs that rely heavily on personal training revenues.  In a home setting, since a functional trainer does the same motions as a cable crossover it only makes sense to go the route of the functional trainer and free up space for other home fitness equipment.

In conclusion, it is up to the end user’s needs as to which Dual Adjustable Cable Column unit is the best.  They are all constructed of the same high-quality raw materials and basically do the same motions with some individual variations.  Take a look at your usable floor space, the people who will be working out on the equipment, and your budget since many times a functional trainer can be less money than a cable crossover.
